NPCI: Nowadays, online transactions have become essential for everyone. We’ve developed the habit of using our phones to quickly make payments in place of cash. However, instances of online fraud are also becoming more prominent as the usage of digital payments grows. In light of this, the National Payments Corporation of India, or NPCI, has made significant progress with relation to UPI.

This UPI Collect Request feature was developed for those who need to borrow money from others. In the past, you would send the other person a payment request, and money would transfer to your account as soon as the recipient entered his UPI PIN. This tool was established to facilitate interpersonal UPI transaction safety and eliminate the inconvenience of requesting money.

How did the misuse of Collect Request increase

Fraudsters turned the facility, which was designed to be helpful, into a weapon. A lot of people began stealing money from others by enticing them with lottery tickets, phony promises, or other schemes. Frequently, when you call or message someone, you are told that money will be deposited into your account; however, you must accept the request. People’s money is transferred straight to the fraudster’s account once they input the PIN. This is the cause of the ongoing rise in fraud cases.

NPCI’s big decision: Collect Request closed from October 1

Keeping in mind the safety of the customers, NPCI has decided that from October 1, 2025, the Collect Request facility of UPI will be completely discontinued. This means that now no user will be able to send a payment request to anyone through UPI. This step has been taken so that common people can be protected from fraud and online transactions can be more secure.

Normal use of UPI will continue

You shouldn’t be concerned that the shutdown of Collect Request would have an impact on UPI usage. NPCI has stated unequivocally that it will not impact UPI’s regular transactions in any way. As previously, you will be able to send and receive money. Every day, millions of users utilize UPI, and each month, over 16 billion transactions occur. Strengthening security becomes crucial in such a scenario.

Why was this step necessary

Trust is the most valuable resource in the current digital era. The system as a whole will be called into question if individuals quit making payments online out of concern for fraud. NPCI has demonstrated that consumer security is their top priority by closing Collect Request. This ruling will undoubtedly increase public confidence in digital payments and further protect UPI.
